Hi everybody,

I hope somebody can help me ...

Since last week I have a problem with two of my older external hard-disk drives. Both are from Western Digital.
A few weeks ago they both worked perfectly fine, but now, when I conect them to my PC, Windows dont see / can't find them anymore...

Together they contain 3TB with music and music-BluRay rips, I will feel pretty sad and sick if they are gone and lost forever :_:-(

Does somebody knows what to do to fix it?
Yesterday I've searched on Google, but no good luck so far..

Many thanks in advance!!

What model?
as i use to have the same issue so i uninstalled the drivers, that did the trick for me.

If that dont work try using a different cable.

Hi TimmyBoy91,

I have the WD10000H1U-00 and the WDAAU0020HKB-01.

Tried them both with 3 different cables, but no difference..

Will try your solution with the drivers, many thanks!

i would check the connections first if your using a docking bay could be the fire wire to usb plug is going bad or not making a proper connection , its a common thing , also make sure the drive is spinning up .
if your hooking it thru a sata cable go to computer management / click disk management / it should be listed there either way then check to see if its off or on .. you can do a windows scan disk aka disk repair from there not a format which is what your after a format will delete the files dont want that one . :_facepalm
if your still spinning up and its not showing anywhere it may be time for a new docking bay ....
try the drivers also wd also has a tool called data lifeguard get it :_B)

Many thanks for those tips Superbikemike!!

And indeed, I don't want to format the HDD's , because of the files, really don't want to loose them.

Well, before thinking of any losing data thoughts, you better make some troubleshoots to make sure such things.

1. Try different Connector cable, don't trust one that you're using, whether it's SATA or portable driver box, sometime damaged cable couldn't work even it shows it's connected.
2. Make sure the drivers, Go to device manager and under System Devices/Universal  controller/software devices check the drivers are up-to-date, sometimes the outdated drivers won't let you connect any external device correctly.
3. Just say if the HDD really gets connected, then it must have shown under Device manager > Disk Drives menu, if none of them listed their then obviously you must try above 2 tips to make sure they connect or not, if connects but no data in them, it's fine, if connects but responding from drives then they are dead!

Anyway, first thing first, find out if the drives really connects or not by following the above methods. :_:)

Thank you Prom3th3uS!

I'm gonna uninstal the drivers first, like Timmyboy wrote.
If that don't fix the problem. I will try Superbikemike and your advices!

Thank you all!!

To be continued .....

I've got also the 2nd HDD back!! It took me some more time (and frustration) than the first one, but at the end everything is fine now :_:)

The Data Lifeguard tool fixed the problem!

Hello.

I am using this very thread to explain my issue as the Topic is about Hard Drives.

Lately I have been facing this issue of my Internal Hard Drives not showing on my file explore,

1 When I download files
2 When i copy files to my Internal Hard Drive
3 When watching a movie stored in my Internal Hard Drive
4 When playing Games.

Doing any of the 4 results - I/O error the path could not be found. - then the said programs crash.
The internal hard drive partitions disappear from my file explorer and then appear again.

Since the last 2 days, the SSD also appears and disappears when trying to do any of the about 4.

Please note - My External Hard Drives  & Drive C (part of my internal hard drive) are intact. I mean, they don't disappear and appear like my other Internal Hard Drive partions.

All that being said , my internal hard drive Croaks / Breathes Heavy / Revs Heavy for 2 seconds straight before crashing the game, movie, copying files.

Any help on this matter will be greatly appreciated.

I also tried formatting my Internal Hard Drive partitions (except Drive C), no luck at all.

Just need help with this issue, driving me dizzy.

Then its really quite odd.
The obvious answer is a dying drive, but that would usually affect all partitions.
Assuming its windows, check your system log [in event viewer] for drive related errors.

Hey, i checked the system log, and it is logged with errors.
Some in Yellow and some in Red.

Red error - A fatal hardware error has occurred. A record describing the condition is contained in the data section of this event.

You can try a nice program called hdsentinel . The free version tells u the health of your hard drive it  is very useful. Also it worth noting about your sata cables can cause I/O problems. i bought some from stupid ebay one time they were brand new etc, looked fine but was having issues for weeks. turned out they were not good quality, i got some from local PC shop replaced cables and drive was fine!

Hello.

The cables are fine. And i will try and install hdsentinal.

But the internal hard drive croak / rev / breathe heavy is getting me worried.

I got all of photos and music backed up on my external hard drive already. I will now take a back up of my web bookmarks too.

Hopefully, BattleStar would know the meaning of the Yellow and Red warnings displayed on Event Viewer. So waiting for his feedback as well.

Thanks RealityShow for your kind inputs too. I appreciate it.

Fatal hardware errors generally mean one thing, its going to die.
Backup everything you need (you should be doing that anyway !) and replace the drive, before it gives up completely.

I'm happy to hear you got your HDDs sorted out...
I'm still mad on the Samsung 2Tb 860 SSD I bought...
All fine but when they reached some 1,5Tb of disc filled.
It "died" ... yes I got my money back...almost ...but not the PnP but who cares?
